MAKING SURE FR IS WORN PROPERLY

For PPE to effectively protect a worker, it must be used correctly, so employers should begin with proper training and create an ongoing enforceable policy to make sure workers are wearing their PPE properly and not putting themselves at risk.

THE BASICS

For the oil and gas industry, there are some universal rules that should be followed when wearing FR garments. These rules include some “common sense” practices such as tucking in shirts, not rolling sleeves up, and keeping garments zipped or buttoned up.

It's not always black and white...

Non-FR/AR undergarments are permitted if they are made from non-melting fabrics like cotton, silk, or wool.
The small amounts of elastic used in socks and underwear are the only meltable fibers allowed.
Garments such as coveralls, designed to be removed quickly and easily in the event of a flash fire, should never be worn with the sleeves rolled up, half-unzipped or unbuttoned. Sleeves should be rolled down and secured at the wrist.
